General overview of the disposal of textile waste
Textile waste comprises a variety of materials, including clothing, home textiles and industrial textiles. Disposing of this waste is a challenge as it often contains mixed fabrics, synthetic fibres and contaminants. Traditionally, much textile waste has been landfilled or incinerated, which has led to environmental pollution. Nowadays, the focus is increasingly on recycling and reuse to extend the life cycle of textiles and reduce dependence on primary raw materials.
New legal requirements for the separate collection of textile waste
Since 1 January 2025, municipalities in Germany have been obliged to collect textile waste separately. This regulation aims to increase the recycling rate and keep valuable materials in the economic cycle. However, little will change for consumers as the organisation of collection is the responsibility of the public waste management authorities. Clear guidelines for soiled and unusable textiles
Despite the new separate collection obligation, soiled and unusable materials such as rags or cleaning cloths may still be disposed of with residual waste. The Gemeinschaft für textile Zukunft (GftZ) emphasises that it would be a misinterpretation to assume that such textiles must now be disposed of differently. This clarification is intended to avoid uncertainty and ensure that residual waste disposal for heavily soiled textiles is maintained.
Innovations in textile recycling: the first fully recycled polyester T-shirt
A remarkable advance in textile recycling was recently achieved by the French biotechnology company Carbios and an alliance of leading brands such as Patagonia, On, Puma, Salomon and PVH Corp. Together they presented a white T-shirt made entirely from biologically recycled polyester fibres. This project demonstrates the potential of enzymatic recycling processes, which make it possible to break down polyester textiles into their basic building blocks and produce new high-quality fibres from them.
